Thursday morning I was on the road for about an hour before I hit black ice. The next thing I knew I had not control over my car. None at all. I was swerving all of the place. I was trying to correct, but then I would swerve the other way, and just kept trying to correct the car and gain control. The next thing I knew I was crossing the other lane and headed for a bank. I remember hitting the bank, but when I opened my eyes (I didn't loose consciousness) I was hanging upside down in the car. I had rolled the car one and a half times.
The cops got their and the fire department, they helped get me out of the car. I was able to get ahold of Elizabeth, and she packed up Lauren and went to find the boys. She left a note on their truck. Thankfully they came back only about 10 minutes after that and got the update from Elizabeth. They were able to meet me in Aberdeen right when I got there with the tow-truck driver.
The car is probably totalled, but I won't know until this week. The Mazda did hold up really well. The dogs are fine, and so am I. I hit my head on the ceiling, and have quite a few bumps, bruises and am pretty stiff. But am okay.
Eventhough this pretty much ruined our holiday, I do have a lot to be thankful for. Especially:
-the nice man that was behind me when I wrecked. He dialed 911 and stayed with me until the cops got there.
-my seatbelt. If I hadn't been wearing it, things would have been a lot worse.
-my supportive family and husband.
-Jake and Elizabeth, who let us stay at their house for a couple days. Jake also drove us home on Saturday. They made me as comfortable as possible, filled us up with great food and were just great friends. Thank you!
-that there wasn't anybody else involved in the accident, or coming the other way on the highway.
I have pretty much made the decision that once the snow flies we don't travel anymore. So if anybody is up for Christmas in July, we are game!
After I hear from the insurance company and know the car is going to be totalled we will get another one. I am pretty sure they can't repair it. I wish they could, the last thing I want to deal with right now are car salesmen.
I hope everyone else had a nice holiday weekend. Please drive safe, and even if the roads look okay, there might be ice on the road, so take it slow! I don't care if you make people mad, slower is better. And above all, please be sure to wear your seatbelt!

ReplyDeleteOh, Mindy! We are so glad that you are ok and glad that no one was hurt. I know how scary car wrecks can be...similar thing happened to me when I was a teen, except we rolled off a bank and took out a fence..so scary, but you're right- so much to be thankful for. You will be in our prayers:)
